Our Story
Joey Navarro epitomizes the phrase that legendary producers and A&R executives have used for years in describing breakthrough talent; “The right sound at the right time.” Like Herbie Hancock, Grover Washington Jr., George Benson and Esmerelda Spalding, Joey’s compositions cross seamlessly between multiple musical genres. The result is a highly marketable sound who today’s audience is hungry for. His unique blend of R&B and Latin Jazz fuse effortlessly to create a sound like no other. As described by Grammy award-winning producer Paul Brown; “Navarro’s music can be summed up in one word… TASTY!”

Upon moving to Los Angeles, Joey’s main goal was to create and perform music at the highest level possible. In the summer of 2010, he was approached by Joey Heredia and Brandon Fields at the Baked Potato. They encouraged him to form his own group and JOEY NAVARRO LATIN FUNK BAND was born. The group consists of Brandon Fields on woodwinds, Joey Heredia on drums, Rene Camacho on bass, and Joey De Leon Junior on percussion. Simply put, these are some of the most gifted musicians on the planet. This dynamic group performs in the Los Angeles jazz scene; playing on a regular basis to a packed house at the World Famous Baked Potato Jazz Club. Their individual list of credits read like a “who’s who” in the music business.

Joey Navarro
Born and raised in the onion fields of Tolleson, AZ (20 miles west of Phoenix) this third generation Mexican-American cut his teeth on R&B, Jazz, Fusion, Mexican Heritage and Latin pop of the late 60's and 70's. A few years removed from high school, Joey landed a major record deal with Island Records-Antilles New Direction (NY). The Album “On The Rocks” was a melting pot of Funk, R&B, and the fusion sounds of the mid-80’s. At the age of 23, Joey Navarro was in on the birth of contemporary jazz. Concurrently, Joey toured with recording artists as a keyboardist and musical director. After years of honing his skills on the road, Joey returned home to sabbatical with teacher "El Maestro" Ernesto Chavarria. While completing his 4-year tutelage under Chavarria, Joey found the road and stage calling him yet again.

In 2001, Joey relocated to Los Angeles to seek opportunities as a premier keyboardist and producer. Since then, his list of musical credits include working with Tierra, El Chicano, Andy Vargas, Benny Rietveld, Pete Escovedo & the E Family, Jeffrey Osborne, Tom Scott, Sister Sledge, Walfredo Reyes Junior, Abraham Laboriel Senior, Oskar Cartaya, Brandon Fields, Ersi Arvizu, Leland Sklar, Vinnie Colaiuta, Jim Keltner, Dawn Robinson (En Vogue), Jennifer Paige, DW3, Brian Bromberg, and a long list of others.

Joey got the opportunity of a lifetime to co-write the bulk of the tunes for Ersi Arvizu's latest album entitled, "Friend for Life.” This is an autobiographical musical journey about her amazing life. It was produced by Ry Cooder (Buena Vista Social Club). The worldwide release date was May 9th, 2008.

In 2014, Joey joined forces with Grammy-winning producer Paul Brown and recorded Grover Washington’s “Strawberry Moon.” The track was released on Woodward Avenue Records, 9 Mile Road with Joey on piano, Paul Brown on guitar, The late Ricky Lawson on drums, Lenny Castro on percussion, and Roberto Vally on bass.

Joey also produced Smooth Ride recording artist, Kyle Wolverton’s CD entitled, “SOUL GROOVE.” This great CD features the talents of Abraham Laboriel Senior, Joey Heredia, Vail Johnson, and a host of other fine musicians. As of January 10th, 2010, the single, “Can’t Stop The Feeling” rose to #7 on Broadcast Architecture’s Smooth Jazz Top 20 list.

March 10th 2022, Joey was recognized for his musical achievements and received a proclamation by his home state of Arizona. Representative, Diego Espinoza presented the honor on The Arizona House Floor.

Joey De Leon Jr
You may compare Joey De Leon Jr's playing to the very place he was born in, Hell's Kitchen in NYC. A fiery, intense, yet compassionate percussionist, his dream of being a musician began at the young ripe age of 3. His father was also a percussionist who was involved in the 70's rise of euphoric Salsa and his mother Lucille is a tremendous dancer in this same genre. He was also inspired by his Uncle Vito who instilled the idea to learn to read music. He went on to receive his Bachelors Degree and earned the institution's highest award for Outstanding Musicianship from the prestigious Manhattan School of Music in 1990.

After graduation, Joey went on his first international tour performing "Sophisticated Ladies". Afterwards, he pursued his career in Los Angeles playing with violinist Susie Hansen, guitar duo Strunz and Farah, and broke into studio work.

In 2002, he would travel all over the world with Grammy winning artist, former Earth Wind & Fire member Al McKay. The gig lasted four years producing a DVD from Lithuania.

In the summer of 2006, Joey was called to play with Grammy winner, Poncho Sanchez. This gig put him amongst the top echelon of percussionists in Los Angeles today. At the same time, he was invited by Alex Acuna to participate in his 2008 video called "The Rhythm Collector".

In late 2007, Joey received a call from pianist John Beasley to tour with yet another Grammy winning artist, Queen Latifah.

2009 was a great year for Joey. The year began with his first big movie session, "Confessions of a Shopaholic." He also participated in his first SABIAN Night at NAMM performing with Oskar Cartaya and the Enclave. In addition, he recorded with another hero of his, Orestes Vilato on the current Grammy nominated CD "It's About Time." Also a highlight was to tour with Puerto Rico superstars Gilberto Santa Rosa and Victor Manuelle and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra led by pianist Oscar Hernandez.
